The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) recently issued two ground-breaking rules to provide patients with unprecedented access to their healthcare data.
Together, the final rules put forth by the HHS Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC) and The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services mark a historic change towards a true interoperable, value-based healthcare system.
“These rules are the start of a new chapter in how patients experience American healthcare, opening up countless new opportunities for them to improve their own health, find the providers that meet their needs, and drive quality through greater coordination” shares HHS Secretary Alex M. Azar.
“Delivering interoperability actually gives patients the ability to manage their healthcare the same way they manage their finances, travel and every other component of their lives. This requires using modern computing standards and APIs that give patients access to their health information and give them the ability to use the tools they want to shop for and coordinate their own care on their smartphones,” said Don Rucker, M.D., National Coordinator for Health Information Technology.
Investing in Interoperability
NewWave’s SAFHIR, the Platform for FHIR-based interoperability, is the only CMS Rule-Compliant, FHIR platform to date. As leading developers of Blue Button (BB) 2.0 for CMS, NewWave designed SAFHIR to allow payers, providers and patients to get what Medicare beneficiaries now have. NewWave has partnered with Microsoft to securely enable the exchange of healthcare data in a standard FHIR format to bridge interoperability gaps across the healthcare system.
Learn more about NewWave’s standards-based SAFHIR solution in our podcast series, Talks for the Greater Good. In a recent episode, NewWave’s SVP of Informatics shares the impact such a platform will have for payers in the next wave of the interoperable, value-based care revolution.
“In our work at CMMI and in our FHIR-based product offering, SAFHIR, we look to facilitate genuine interoperability that focuses on the patient and improving outcomes. Given that interventions which ameliorate SDOH are material to both, championing the work of the Gravity project aligns with both NewWave’s strategic aims and our mission to ‘solve for the greater good” shares Mr. Seib.
