“What NewWave has demonstrated in building the Blue Button 2.0 API with CMS is the power of innovation possible in public-private partnerships,” says Patrick Munis, CEO of NewWave. “The technology itself will ignite innovation by making health data available in unprecedented ways to consumers and developers, but just as important is that Blue Button represents a new way for the government to do business with citizens by giving them direct access to their data.”
Blue Button 2.0 is an API that contains four years of Medicare Part A, B and D data for millions of Medicare beneficiaries and delivers on what CMS Administrator Seema Verma has identified as the Data Driven Patient Care Strategy. “We know we can’t achieve value-based care until we put the patient at the center of our healthcare system,” says Verma. “The Strategy will empower patients with the information they need as consumers of healthcare to enable them to make informed decisions about the care they need. Ultimately, the cornerstone of a patient-centered system is data—quality data, cost data and a patient’s own data.” Blue Button 2.0 allows this to start happening for the first time.
“We’ve imported 12 million records into a platform that serves 53 million beneficiaries, enabling them to share their health information … with the applications, services and research programs they trust,” says Mark Scrimshire, Entrepreneur-In-Residence and Blue Button Innovator and Developer Evangelist at NewWave. “NewWave has built that end-to-end solution – taking the data into the platform, delivering it up in standards format … and building applications that can connect into that API. Blue Button allows consumers to choose who they want to share their data with.”
